AR500 Steel Target Post Protector
This is our AR500 Steel Target Post Protector. Simply put, this guard is designed for any shooter that is tired of having to always replace 2X4 wood posts on their range. 2X4 posts are a fantastic option for AR500 or AR550 steel target mounting. They are lightweight, portable, and fit easily into most vehicles. The biggest downside you will face: Fragmentation wears out the posts in short order. 2X4’s also only last for a few stray rounds, then it’s time to replace them.
Saving Your Range Overhead
If you own and operate a range, paying your employees to replace 2X4’s is burning overhead. It isn’t productive, it doesn’t produce revenue or create a better facility. Shift your focus from maintenance, to expansion. Likewise, the home-based shooter cannot afford to waste time with fragmentation ridden wooden posts. That cuts into your valuable and finite training time. The 2X4 AR500 Steel Target Post Protector was designed to solve all these problems.
Built Like our Dueling and Falling Tree Shields
Robust Swedish AR500 material is the chosen material. Further, we used the same high quality steel used in our Exodus Line of AR500 / AR550 components. While most companies opt for a flat piece of steel, we weld our guard in a “V” configuration. Look no further than our Rifle Dueling Tree and Falling Tree targets to see the benefits. A “V” shape properly deflects the fragmentation away from the shooter. A flat piece of steel on a post can return bullet fragmentation back towards you. The “V” shape also dissipates energy, expanding the life of your post and entire system.
Welded intentionally with precision
We utilize a special gas shielded flux core wire anytime we are welding AR500 or AR550 materials. This wire properly transfers heat and bonds the materials together. It is also more flexible than standard hard wire mig welds, and resists cracking exponentially better. This all equates to a longer lifespan of the guard, minimizing downtime of your range and systems.
Multi-Function Brackets
The brackets loosely fit over any standard 2X4 post and allow maximum flexibility in mounting. You can use the included (8) Grade 5 Carriage Bolts and lock nuts. Or, if you desire a faster application, use simple deck screws in the various holes to hold the guard to your post. The Carriage bolt method is more robust, lasts longer, and keeps that guard where it needs to be. The deck screw method is faster to set up. You get to choose.

1.) Is this 2X4 Post Guard Worth the Investment?
Answer: Yes. If you are a regular shooter, this is an important accessory. We’ve worked with ranges across the country. Most are burning overhead maintaining stuff that shouldn’t need maintained. Every hour spent replacing boards is another hour wasted. Further, most ranges burn the 2X4 boards, which can create toxic plumes of lead ridden smoke. Not good! Even if you are simply shooting on your home range, this substantially expands the life of your 2X4 wooden posts. Don’t make the mistake thinking this is only for the professional range. This is PERFECT for folks who already have 2X4 systems, don’t want to purchase full armored posts, and need to extend the life of their boards.
2.) Should you get this, or our Adjustable Armored Post?
Answer: This question is boiled down to a few questions. Do you already have a TA Targets 2X4 system? Are you looking to spend a little less than an armored post? Are you a lower volume shooter? This product is perfect for folks who already have our systems with the 2X4 top bracket. Simply purchase this guard, install, and extend the life of your posts. If you are a newer customer or are purchasing a NEW system, the Adjustable Armored Post might be the right move. The real benefit of the Adjustable Armored posts is that you never need to replace it. It’s built for a lifetime of use. While this guard does effectively protect the most likely impact zone, stray rounds COULD still destroy your 2X4 for very low shots.
3.) Will this guard resist rifle impacts?
Answer: Yes! Just like our Rifle Dueling Tree and Falling Tree, this guard will effectively deflect stray rifle rounds. Distance ratings of this guard fall in line with our AR500 Genesis systems. This means that you should avoid direct close range rifle impacts on the post guard. But, fragmentation, even when fired from close range rifles, will be resisted with ease. It’s important to note: NEVER use the guard intentionally as a target. Damage WILL occur. It is NOT designed to be utilized as a target for intentional shots. But it WILL resist stray rounds and heavy fragmentation with ease.
4.) What hardware is included with this product?
Answer: We include (4) 3/8″-16 X 3 1/4″ Grade 5 Carriage Bolts with (4) 3/8″-16 Locking Nuts. While the brackets are designed for wood screws as well, we do NOT include wood screws with this product. You would have to source them yourself if you desire to mount them with screws.
5.) Does This Product Fall Under Prop. 65 Warnings?
Answer: Maybe. Just in case, be sure not to eat the paint or lick the target before or after you’ve shot it. If you are just curious, led tastes horrible and will probably cause mental damage. If you have done it once you are likely to do it again. Handle at your own risk, if you choose, you may wear an industry grade hazmat suit and gas mask with a HEPA filter and good luck charm on your wrist.
